Northern Colorado Educational Landscape: A Comprehensive Analysis (2026-2027)

A technical reference covering public school district profiles, enrollment mechanics, charter schools, private academies, UPK, and higher education cost structures. For a buyer-facing summary, see the School Choice in Northern Colorado guide.

Regional Governance and District Structure

Northern Colorado is served by a patchwork of school districts ranging from expansive urban systems to small rural cooperatives. The North Central Region, as defined by the Colorado Department of Education, includes districts across Larimer, Weld, and Boulder counties. Enrollment figures reflect the significant suburbanization of the Front Range I-25 corridor.

Poudre School District (PSD) — Fort Collins

PSD operates over 50 schools with enrollment of 29,772, making it the largest and most programmatically diverse district in the region. Its elementary landscape ranges from IB World Schools to bilingual immersion, STEM academies, and project-based learning schools.

Secondary Pathways

At the middle school level, Lesher and Lincoln continue the IB Middle Years Program (MYP). Kinard Core Knowledge Middle School serves students focused on a classical curriculum and feeds into rigorous high school pathways.

Poudre High School runs the full IB Pre-Diploma and Diploma pathway — characterized by a rapid academic pace and emphasis on extended reading and writing. PSD's four comprehensive high schools each serve distinct quadrants of Fort Collins: Poudre HS (northwest), Fort Collins HS (central), Rocky Mountain HS (southeast), and Fossil Ridge HS (southwest/Timnath growth corridor).

Thompson School District (TSD) — Loveland and Berthoud

TSD (enrollment 14,907) differentiates through the Loveland-area Integrated School of the Arts (LISA) program, supported by the Erion Foundation. Arts instruction is integrated into core content across all LISA grade levels — not siloed to an elective block.

Career and Technical Education (CTE) Pathways

TSD runs CTE pathways aligned to the Colorado Career Cluster Model at its Thompson Career Campus and individual high schools:

Greeley-Evans School District 6

District 6 (enrollment 22,170) has restructured its secondary model around specialized academies and a landmark dual-enrollment partnership with Aims Community College that enables students to earn an Associate of Arts degree while still in high school.

Greeley WestAgricultural Academy (Animal Science, Horticulture), IB, Fashion/Interior Design
NorthridgeSTEM Academy (Engineering, IT, Math/Science), JROTC, Criminal Justice
JeffersonAlternative program, on-site child care for teen parents, CTE focus

The STEM Academy at Northridge is particularly comprehensive: students can earn CompTIA A+, Network+, and Security+ certifications, plus college credits in Revit Architecture and SolidWorks. The Early College Academy has been recognized by U.S. News & World Report as one of the best high schools in 2025.

Enrollment Mechanics and Choice Protocols (2026-2027)

Colorado's open enrollment laws allow families to apply to schools outside their neighborhood boundaries. Acceptance depends on seat availability and district priority rankings. Most districts use a multi-round system with lottery-based first-round processing.

DistrictFirst-Round WindowSecond Round OpensResults
Poudre R-1Nov 3 – Dec 15, 2025Jan 14, 2026Feb 2026
Thompson R-2JNov 3 – Jan 30, 2026OngoingFeb 2026
Greeley-Evans 6Nov 1 – Dec 18, 2025Jan 2026Prior to Feb 1, 2026
Weld RE-4Oct 1 – Jan 15, 2026Feb 15, 2026Feb 15, 2026
Weld RE-5JMarch 2026 (Check-In)OngoingRolling

In PSD, first-round applications are processed by lottery (not first-come, first-served). If a seat is offered, families have five business days to accept or decline. In the second round, submissions are prioritized by date and time. Choice students — those attending a school outside their neighborhood boundary — are responsible for their own transportation. Districts do not provide busing for out-of-boundary choice placements.

Federal McKinney-Vento protections apply for families in transitional housing — immediate enrollment without traditional documentation.

Universal Preschool (UPK) — 2026-2027

Colorado's Universal Preschool program funds 15 hours per week of preschool for every child in the year before kindergarten (4 years old on or before October 1, 2026 for the 2026-27 year). Low-income families and those with qualifying factors (foster care, homelessness, active IEP) may receive up to 30 hours. The central portal is upk.colorado.gov with 2,000+ participating providers.

Charter Schools

Charter schools in Northern Colorado are tuition-free public schools funded by property taxes and open to all Colorado students by lottery. They operate with greater autonomy over curriculum and management than district schools. All require a separate application process; acceptance is not guaranteed.
